You’re not sari, 2022
Dual heritage and Britain’s colonial past are brought together in You’re not sari showcasing laser cut earrings comprised of clear and distinct shapes in an untraditional response to South Asian adornment. The decision to incorporate jewellery into the project was inspired by Jewellery designer Anisha Parmar whose project ‘empowered adornment’ investigates cultural jewellery as a ‘tool of empowerment…and a form of body armour’ (Parmar, 2021). The power/symbolism of culture attached to South Asian Jewellery guided the theory behind You’re not sari as the piece aims to demonstrate the history of colonialism in South Asia. The red beads symbolise the riches stolen and the brutality of colonialism as the beads echo the appearance of blood. The earrings are inspired by my mixed raced heritage (white Italian and Pakistani). The tethering of the earrings together by the red beads, not only creates a physical weight but also links to the heavy history attached to South Asian heritage.
