Under my skin

Description:

Under my skin, 2021

Under my skin is a personal piece that materially and visually highlights the complex layers that lie beneath my skin. The deep red section reveals a complex composition of string that encompasses/consumes the whole canvas creating tension and anxiety representing the inequalities and discrimination I have faced as a Muslim and woman of colour. However, there is strength shown in the next layer as mod roc is used to mimic a bandage texture emphasising the beginning of the healing process. The depiction of healing was inspired by an analogy in Dorothy Price’s article Binding Trauma where bandages are described as a temporary fix as ‘if they become undone too soon the wound may reopen…and the original trauma may become more difficult to heal. Similarly, In Under my skin, the wounds that lie beneath may never fully disappear as the outlines of the string can be seen underneath the mod roc and oil painted skin illustrating that although they are healed, there is a possibility of the wound re-opening if further trauma occurs.
