Description:
Tethered, 2022
Tethered merges Bharatanatyam classical dance with a contemporary dance performed as a duet by Molly (White) and Lavanya (Indian) portraying the two parts of a mixed-raced identity: illustrating tension, distance and at times synchronisation. The deep red tone, symbolic of suffering and bloodshed, is a consistent element within this body of work seen through the lighting and objects the dancers interact with. For example, The empire is a de-constructed map revealing a violent presentation of countries colonised by the British through the dense red fibres formed at Britain’s position on the map. Lavanya interacts with the map by tracing the string connecting Britain and India in an act of understanding the past. Tethered also includes scenes of the dancers physically connected by earrings – forcing a closeness and, in turn, an understanding of each other.
