Inner battle, 2022

Inner battle is a sculptural wall piece composed of strands of knotted red thread against a bleak white torso cast. The piece is displayed against a white wall to create the illusion that the body has disappeared, leaving the audience to focus solely on the conflict – seen in the red thread. Inner battle links to my experience as a mixed-raced individual, being South Asian and white Italian I have always struggled to identify with both sides and have often felt a conflict within myself and how I am perceived. I constantly felt that I was not Asian enough or not Italian enough – I felt a personal ‘Inner battle’. The conflict I had with my identity was rooted in the discrimination I experienced. I decided to name the piece inner battle as it allows audiences to relate to the battle within the piece in their own way.
