6 of one, half a dozen of the other, 2022
6 of one, half dozen of the other emphasises the struggles mix raced individuals face as well as portraying my own heritage and the strong connection I have with my South Asian roots. The sculpture is composed of multiple MDF semi-circles that fit together to create an abstract sculpture. The presence of semi-circles is a common feature within my work as the shape relates to the idea of two halves/races coming together to create a whole. This semi-circle theme is continued in the vibrant pattern depicted on areas of the sculpture, this pattern is inspired by Ralli Quilts (colourful and geometric quilts made in South-eastern Pakistan). I wanted to incorporate not only the visual geometry but also the meaning behind the quilts as the name Ralli is derived from the local word ‘ralanna’ meaning to mix or connect which describes the sculpture well. A unique feature of 6 of one, half dozen of the other is the unbalanced design within the patterned areas and in the physical design of the sculpture. For example, when the audience is close to the piece, they can see that the semi-circles within the design do not perfectly fit into each other making the whole pattern off kilter. Moreover, the whole structure leans to one side illustrating imbalance. These specific design choices illustrate a metaphorical rift that evokes an unplaceable connotation which many mixed raced individuals identify with.
